Scroll 1.1

Scroll 1.1

We are proud to announce the availability of Scroll 1.1. This release provides the long-awaited theming feature and introduces RenderX XEP as PDF rendering engine.

The short list of the 1.1 features are:

  • Theming - both pluggable and configurable themes.
  • RenderX XEP engine for rendering PDF output.
  • Various other improvements and bugfixes.

Features

Configurable and Pluggable Themes

Scroll now comes with configurable and pluggable themes. This means, Scroll allows global admins and space admin to configure their own themes and -if the preinstalled themes are not enough- let developers create completely new themes:

  • Theme Configuration: In the admin and space admin UI, click on Scroll Theme Config and hit Configure new theme. This will bring up a dialog which lets you define a name and description of the theme and select a so-called theme templates (basically the same as a DocBook customization layer). Depending on the theme template you will be able to define various other parameters, just follow the instructions on the UI.
  • Theme Plugins: it is possible to create your own theme templates, which can be installed as a plugin. That way, people who are already using DocBook customization layers can easily plug them into Scroll. For more information please refer to the Developer Guide.

New Theme(s)

Scroll now comes with the new and fancy Modern Article Theme. It provides a more modern style, and shows how documents can be styled with Scroll.

Also, you can now configure the title page and header images for the themes provided by Scroll 1.0.  (Please note, we have renamed the existing themes to Classic Handbook Theme and Classic Article Theme).

RenderX XEP

Scroll 1.1 now comes with RenderX XEP as PDF rendering engine. RenderX XEP is a world-class rendering engine, which drastically improves the type face and the look of the exported document and also allows you to render professional pre-press artifacts (including bleeds, crop-marks, printer marks, etc.) with Scroll.

Please note that the RenderX XEP only is used for commercial, academic and evaluation licenses. Other licenses will continue to use Apache FOP.

Other Noteworthy Changes

  • Improved Macro Support:
    • {gliffy}
    • {section} and {column} (the columns'  contents will be rendered beneath each other).
    • {jiraissues}
  • Hyphenation in PDF Exporter is now activated (this can actually be configured for each theme individually)
  • Scroll requires JDK 1.5 (finally)

Pricing

Even though Scroll now includes the commercial RenderX XEP engine for PDF rendering, we are proud to provide Scroll still at a very reasonable price. Nevertheless, we had to adjust the prices for commercial and academic license. Please refer to http://www.k15t.com/scroll/pricing/.

Starter Licenses

We provide starter licenses for Scroll 1.1 for free. Although the Scroll starter license is free, we do ask you to donate a suggested $10 to the Room to Read charity.

Disclaimer: Starter licenses will only run on Confluence systems which have Confluence starter licenses installed and uses Apache FOP for PDF rendering.

Compatibility/Known Issues

Scroll 1.1 is compatible with Confluence 2.10 to 3.1-b2, and with one limitation it also runs on Confluence 2.6 to 2.9 (see below).

Issue Description Workaround
n/a (Only applicable on Confluence versions before 2.10) Global themes cannot be configured through the Admin UI. As a workaround themes can be developed and uploaded as theme plugins.
SCROLL-190 There are a few issues with the {live-template} macro from the Scaffolding plugin in combination with a few other macros, e.g. {gliffy} or {to} does not work. Avoid the live-templates and use the normal Scaffolding templating mechanism.
SCROLL-176 Scroll currently does not support non-latin languages (e.g. Cyrillic and Asian languages) out-of-the box. We are working on this issue. Contact sales@k15t.com to get a quote for a customized Scroll version.
